LE BELVEDERE - Located 1,800 feet up in the hills above Papeete. The price of dinner includes complimentary transfers to and from your hotel and their special fondue bourguignon dinner including salad, fries and wine. Other choices are also available. CAFETERIA DU MARCHE - A colorful and inexpensive noon time "snack" located on the upper level of the Papeete Market. While not much English may be spoken, you should have very little trouble making yourself understood. After lunch, visit the many handicraft stalls selling shells, shell jewelry, wood carvings, pareu material, woven hats, etc. Closed Sunday. CASH ONLY

CASABLANCA - Enjoy fine dining in a pleasant waterfront setting. The restaurant is located adjacent to the colorful Marina Taina, just a short distance from the Maeva Beach. Open daily for lunch and dinner. AMEX/VISA/MASTER (43.91.35)

CAPTAIN BLIGH - One of the largest overwater restaurants in the South Seas. Specializes in fresh local sea foods. Included with dinner is a visit to the Lagoonarium, world's largest underwater observatory in a natural environment. Separate fish parks contain a great variety of tropical fish, sharks, moray eels, sea turtles and coral. Closed Sunday evening and all day Monday. AMEX/VISA/MASTER (43.62.90)

JIMMY'S - Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine and all top quality. Located on the corner across from the Mandarin Hotel. MASTER/VISA (43.63.32)

L'APIZZERIA - Across from the water front with a choice of dining under the stars or in the main restaurant. The menu offers a variety of pizzas and other Italian specialties. Good choice for late night dining. Closed Sunday. VISA/MASTER (42.98.30)

LA PETITE AUBERGE - Small and intimate located on the north side of Papeete and featuring French country cuisine. Closed Saturday noon and Sunday. AMEX/DINERS/VISA/MASTER (42.86.13)

LE DAHLIA - Located north of Papeete in the district of Arue and not far from the Radisson Resort is this Chinese restaurant is popular with locals and the few tourists lucky enough to find it. Closed Sundays. VISA/MASTER (42.59.87)

LE LOTUS - Tahiti Beachcomber's gourmet overwater restaurant is adjacent to their sand bottom swimming pool with a view of the lagoon and Moorea in the distance. LE MANDARIN - One of our favorite Chinese restaurants featuring Cantonese cuisine with seafood specialties. Located in Le Mandarin Hotel. Open daily. AMEX/DINERS/MASTER/VISA (42.99.03)

LES ROULOTTES - Mobile diners that set up shop late each afternoon along the waterfront and serve hot meals most of the night. These colorful food-wagons provide good, fast food at reasonable prices as well as an opportunity to watch the waterfront scene of Papeete-by-night. Choose from steak, fish and chips, Chinese food, shish-kabob, pizza - and more. Each wagon seems to feature a different specialty. CASH ONLY

LOU PESCADOU - Open air restaurant on a back street near the center of town that features Italian specialties and pizza. Can be noisy but a lot of fun. Closed Sunday. VISA (43.74.26)

MORRISON'S CAFE - Take the glass elevator behind the Air New Zealand office to the top floor of the Vaima shopping center. The owner spent several years in the US and knows what good food and service is all about. Open for lunch and dinner every day except Sunday. SAKURA - A "teppan" style Japanese restaurant located in the Sofitel Maeva Beach Hotel. Open for dinner daily and for lunch on Sunday. It's very popular so reservations are recommended. AMEX/DINERS/MASTER/VISA (42.80.42)

According to where you are staying, several restaurants can provide free or reduced cost transfers. Ask for information when you make your dinner reservations. In addition to trying some of the many good restaurants, if your stay on Moorea allows time, we urge you to experience an authentic Tahitian "tamaaraa" (feast), with food cooked in the traditional "hima'a", a pit filled with heated volcanic stones. Roast suckling pig, breadfruit, and taro are just a few of the native delicacies you will experience. Following the feast, villagers will entertain you with the songs and dances that have helped make Tahiti famous. This is available several evenings during the week at the Tiki Village.

ALFREDO'S - In Cook's Bay near the Club Bali Hai, offers seafood, pizza, pasta and traditional French and Italian cuisine in a fun atmosphere. Call for reservations and to arrange complimentary transfers. Closed Monday. MASTER/VISA (56.17.71)

CHEZ JEAN PIERRE - The name suggests French, however the food is Chinese and we think it's about the best on this side of Moorea. Located in Cook's Bay near the Club Bali Hai. Check their daily blackboard specials. Closed Wednesday. MASTER/VISA (56.18.51)

BLUE PINEAPPLE - Open only for breakfast and lunch plus a Wednesday night barbecue, this popular spot is located at the edge of the lagoon at the Club Bali Hai. Try their grilled fish sandwich with fries. MASTER/VISA (56.13.68)

FISHERMAN'S WHARF - Located at the Kaveka Hotel (Cook's Bay Bungalows) in a romantic over water setting with a beautiful view of the bay. Lunch can be a simple sandwich or salad or a full meal. Their menu is so varied that whether you are in the mood for Chinese, local seafood or a good steak you'll find something on the menu you are bound to enjoy. Complimentary transfers available. LE AITO - Features French and Corsican specialties plus a fresh lagoon fish and seafood dishes. The restaurant is located between the two bays and is walking distance from the Sheraton. Closed Tuesday. MASTER/VISA (56.45.52)

LE MAHOGANY - Features seafood, steaks, French and Chinese cuisine with a well priced wine list. Try their Chinese style marinated fish. Located near the new Pearl Resort (former Bali Hai). Closed Wednesday. MASTER/VISA (56.39.73)

RUDY'S - Syd Pollock has been involved with Moorea's restaurant world for almost 40 years and this is his newest venture. Named after his eldest son, Rudy's Fine Steaks & Seafood is located between the Pearl Beach Resort and the Kaveka Hotel. The air conditioned restaurant is built in the style of a Spanish hacienda, and is open daily for lunch and dinner. Call for reservations and to arrange for complimentary transfers. TE HONU ITI - (The Little Turtle) This small and intimate restaurant is beside the lagoon in Cook's Bay and features excellent French cuisine in a romantic setting. Try to reserve a table on the terrace. Chef Roger is well known and liked on Moorea for his consistent food quality. Try his hot goat cheese salad - one of our favorites Closed Tuesday. CLUB HOUSE RESTAURANT - Located at the Marina Apooiti overlooking a fleet of charter and cruising yachts. This open air restaurant offers a varied menu with a French flavor. AMEX/VISA

JADE GARDEN - The menu features a surprisingly large selection of well prepared Chinese dishes for an outer island restaurant. Closed Sunday through Tuesday. VISA (66.34.40)

BLOODY MARY'S - The fresh catch of the day is displayed on ice and you will be given an explanation of what is available that evening. Choose from the selections offered or make up your own combination plate. Closed Sunday. VISA/MASTER (67.72.86)
